Toyota's new fuel cell uses natural gas performance to outperform hydrogen

Toyota's new fuel cell uses natural gas directly

At present, Toyota and Honda are both leaders in the hydrogen fuel cell power solution and have already started mass production. However, the speed of construction of hydrogen fuel filling stations has seriously hindered the popularity of this technology. In response, Toyota has begun to develop a natural gas fuel cell power system. This kind of system has stronger reliability, but the design and work flow must be more complicated.

Toyota introduced that the first step in the operation of the natural gas fuel cell power system is to decompose natural gas into carbon monoxide and hydrogen. At the same time, the compressor also injects air into the mixture and generates electricity through the chemical reaction of the fuel cell stack.

During this process, a portion of the exhaust gases of carbon monoxide and hydrogen are generated. These exhaust gases enter a microturbine and generate more electricity during the combustion process. In the final step, the power generation system also uses waste heat to generate additional electricity.

At present, Toyota is testing this natural gas fuel cell system at its round-machi factory in Japan, mainly to evaluate its energy efficiency, performance and durability.

Toyota said that this natural gas fuel cell system can generate 335 horsepower and it will undergo a miniaturized design process in the future.

Toyota believes that the natural gas fuel cell system's power generation efficiency is 55%, but with the support of the waste heat power generation system, this figure will eventually be increased to 65%. At present, the hydrogen fuel cell power generation efficiency is generally 50-55%.
