In order to achieve the goal of reducing the weight of automobiles, machine tool manufacturers are constantly developing new fiber-reinforced resin molding methods. That is, it is possible to use a fiber-reinforced resin to increase the strength of the component, and at the same time, the cost is low or the molding is simple. By making the parts that are replaced by steel parts, the weight can be reduced by about 1/3.
The key to increasing the strength is to keep the reinforcing material - the fiber in the (formed) molded product at a length of 5 mm or more. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Plastics Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Plastics, Headquarters: Nagoya City) released the D-LFT (LFT: Long Fiber reinforced Thermoplastics) system that can separately supply fibers and resins to the injection molding machine on March 2, 2015. "(figure 1). The company has previously developed an "LFT screw" that ensures the fiber length by reducing the degree of fiber breakage when the resin is melted in the heating cylinder of the injection molding machine and kneaded and metered. By using a screw and D-LFT system, molding companies can purchase fiber and resin separately, which can reduce material costs compared to purchasing materials (particles) that are previously mixed with fibers.

Fiber with a length of 9mm and resin are separately charged
The D-LFT system is to be mounted on a large injection molding machine with a clamping force of 550 tf or more (Fig. 2)*1. According to estimates from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Plastics, the system can reduce material costs by approximately 25% and the total cost of molded products by approximately 11%. Although the total price of the injection molding machine including the D-LFT system is "1.5 to 1.6 times that of the injection molding machine" (the company), "but it can be lower than the price of competitors such as Germany" (the company).
