Recently, Anirudh Sharma, a scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab, recently invented a device called "Kaala" that swallows harmful pollutants and quickly turns them into useful substances, adding only alcohol and Oil can produce black printer ink.
Sharma said that making this ink is not a hassle. When the candle is burning, use a vacuum pump to draw away the surrounding air, so that the black carbon material, the combustion product, is separated from the rest of the air. Next, the black ash is focused into a small compartment, adding alcohol - in this case vodka - and a drop of olive oil. Finally, the mixed liquid can be placed in a regular ink cartridge for daily use. Sharma estimates that a carbon produced in a diesel engine that has been in use for four years can fill an HP cartridge. A chimney takes about 10 minutes. Sharma not only wants to get rid of harmful carbon in the air, but also wants to create a cheaper ordinary printer ink that solves the problem of high ink prices. Sharma admits that the ink can still be darker. But this is only a research project. Before entering the market, Kaala needs to pass the formal non-toxic standard verification.
“In general, people don’t understand this, but the ink you buy is nothing special,†he said. “The carbon black is made with some chemicals. That’s it. If you make your own ink, the cost is absolutely very, very low. Sharma hopes that his handheld device will be larger and can be used on mainstream carbon capture systems: for example, to capture the giant fan wall that hides carbon in the air. In the future, he hopes to commercialize this setting, and hopes that every household in the world can use it for everyone's convenience.
