The use of solar energy to decompose water and produce hydrogen fuel is one of the most promising clean energy technologies being developed. One of the biggest obstacles to it is the discovery of an efficient and stable semiconductor material for the water decomposition process. Now a team at the University of Exeter claims that this obstacle has been cleared. The use of an artificial photosynthesis process to decompose water into its constituent hydrogen and oxygen atoms guarantees cleanliness and zero carbon emissions. The generated hydrogen has more than twice the energy density of fossil fuels, and when used, its by-product is water. It will also provide a virtually unlimited source of energy.
In order to achieve this goal, the University of Exeter team established a new photoelectrode that absorbs light and triggers electrochemical conversion, using nanoparticles of neodymium, iron and oxygen to extract hydrogen from water. Its creators claim that the yttria oxide semiconductor material is an inexpensive spray pyrolysis technique, followed by a post-annealing step, and is the strongest candidate for renewable hydrogen generation because it is stable, low cost, and should be available globally Widely used within range.
The first author of the article, Govinder Pawar, said: “We have already demonstrated that our LaFeO3 photoelectrode has the ideal energy band structure required for the automatic alignment of the energy bands, eliminating the need for external biasing. In addition, our materials have excellent stability. After 21 hours of testing, it will not degrade and is very suitable for water decomposition purposes. We are working hard to further improve the material and make it more efficient to produce more hydrogen."
