Sharp Corporation announced today that it has made breakthroughs in the "Innovative Solar Cell R&D" project supported by Japan's New Energy Industry Technology Comprehensive Development Agency. They created a new record of solar cell conversion efficiency, and its newly developed solar cell conversion efficiency has reached 43.5%. This record is the highest concentration conversion efficiency in the world and has been certified by the German Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems. In November 2011, Sharp just updated this record to 36.9%.
In recent years, major solar cell manufacturers have been working hard to improve the conversion efficiency of solar cells, including the use of thin film technology or crystalline silicon materials to increase the absorption of sunlight.
This new type of solar cell, known as a concentrating triple junction compound solar cell, uses a lens-like technology that concentrates sunlight directly on the surface of the cell to generate electricity to generate electricity better.
This new concentrator battery is only 1 centimeter in length and width. It adopts a patented technology and stacks three light absorption layers, which effectively convert sunlight into electricity. In addition, the spacing between the electrodes is optimized, minimizing the battery resistance at the concentrator cell surface. The technicians said: "Composite solar cells use light absorption layers to absorb light energy. Some compounds are needed in the manufacturing process, such as indium and bismuth. From the basic structural point of view, the latest three-junction compound solar cells have undergone special treatment. Three light absorbing layers can be effectively stacked, with indium gallium arsenide as the bottom layer."
At present, the common solar panels on the market have only 15%-20% conversion efficiency. Through this technological breakthrough, we hope that solar cells can reduce costs while improving efficiency. The technology is currently only used in space, but Sharp said it is considering applying it to the ground to further reduce the on-grid price of solar power. (Jiao Xu)
