According to foreign media New Atlas, researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory, in collaboration with scientists at Northern Illinois University, have discovered a new catalyst that can convert carbon dioxide and water into ethanol, and stated that it is “very energy efficient. High, high selectivity to the required final product and low cost".
This catalyst is made of atom-dispersed copper on a carbon powder support, and acts as an electrocatalyst. When water and carbon dioxide pass through it, it is in a low-voltage electric field. This reaction decomposes these molecules and then selectively rearranges them into ethanol, with electrocatalytic selectivity or "Faraday efficiency" higher than 90%. The team stated that this is "far higher than any other reported process."
Once produced, ethanol can be used as a fuel additive or as an intermediate product in the chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Using it as a fuel would be an example of a "circular carbon economy", which facilitates the reuse of carbon dioxide. If the process is driven by renewable energy, the researchers say, it can be done because of its low temperature, low voltage operation and easy response to intermittent power sources.
At this stage, it is not possible to know what the cost will be. There are already some synthetic fuels that use catalysis to capture carbon dioxide; for example, Carbon Engineering is a company that extracts carbon dioxide from the air. The company extracts carbon dioxide from the air to produce synthetic crude oil, which can be refined into high-purity aviation fuel.
Such synthetic fuels need to compete with ordinary fossil gasoline in price, so without knowing how the Argonne team’s carbon capture ethanol competes with bioethanol and other sources, it is difficult to put it "will not be widely used."
