New coating materials keep cars, ships and pipelines away from snow and ice

Believe that everyone has removed crushed ice on the windshield, or nervously watch the aircraft deicing. Attention! Researchers at Colorado State University invented an anti-icing coating that works better than today's best deicing products. Researchers led by Arun Kota, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering, have created an environmentally friendly, inexpensive and durable coating that can prevent cars, ships, aircraft and wires from freezing.

An article published by the researchers in the journal Materials Chemistry states that the innovation is a gel-based soft coating made of PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane), a silicone polymer gel in the industry Has a wide range of uses. Their experimental results were obtained by careful analysis of ice adhesion mechanics.

The performance of the deicing coating is measured as the ice bond strength—the shear stress required to remove the ice layer from the surface in kilopascals (kPa). The Kota team showed that the ice adhesion of the coating was about 5 kPa. In contrast, other soft-coated ice bonds on the market have a bond strength of about 40 kPa (the lower the better). Other types of deicing coatings made of rigid materials such as Teflon are typically about 100 kPa.

What is the spray of a frozen airplane before it is taken off? That is liquid deicing agents, including ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, which work well. Spraying salt or ethylene glycol is the most commonly used passive deicing technology today. According to EPA statistics, only 20 million gallons of deicing chemicals are used by the aviation industry each year. However, these liquid products can infiltrate groundwater and cause environmental problems. And they have to use it again and again.

Kota pointed out that the deicing coating is different from the anti-icing coating. Anti-icing agent delays the formation of ice; while the deicer facilitates the removal of the ice layer after the ice forms and adheres to the surface.

CSU's breakthrough is an environmentally-friendly, high-performance solution. We can prevent ice from adhering to our windshields without using toxic liquid deicers. It will be used as a more permanent protective coating. Kota said: "We think there is a lot of commercial potential."
