Recently, researchers at Cornell University have developed a new filter material. This material helps to remove small organic molecules such as bisphenol a (BPa) from water sources, is cheaper than activated carbon, is more efficient and easier to clean.
This material is a β-cyclodextrin polymer whose basic molecular unit comprises cyclodextrin and tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile. The researchers heated the two components in a solution of potassium carbonate and tetrahydrofuran to join them together in a hard chain and created a porous 3D lattice.
The researchers tested new materials to allow BPa-contaminated water samples to flow through the porous cyclodextrin filter material, activated carbon, and non-porous cyclodextrin polymers. It was found that this new filter material reached 95% of its adsorption capacity within 10 seconds, and other materials required at least 30 minutes to reach maximum adsorption capacity.
This study made β-cyclodextrin the fastest remover of BPa currently found. At the same time, the polymer can absorb a variety of other small organic molecules compared to existing materials.
