Conversion of 3D models between SolidWorks and Pro/ENGINEER software

With the development and popularization of CAD technology, modern designers usually use multiple sets of software for product design and manufacturing at the same time. At the same time, designers will exchange graphics with other companies. The CAD software used by different companies is not the same. In actual work, CAD workers often encounter data and graphics exchange problems between different CAD software. How to convert graphics between different software, the effect of conversion and processing methods are common concerns of designers. Pro/ENGINEER (hereinafter referred to as Pro/E) and SolidWorks are two widely used three-dimensional mechanical design software, and the graphic conversion between the two is often encountered during the design process. As an excellent CAD software, SolidWorks and Pro/E have powerful functions in data exchange and can be easily converted to each other. However, there are some key steps and techniques to be aware of during the graphics conversion process.

This study compares the modeling relationship between software SolidWorks and Pro/E, and successfully converts the 3D assembly model of PEQ400×600 low-profile crusher built under SolidWorks 2006 software into Pro/E WildFire2.0. The physical model under the software.

1 Differences between software SolidWorks and Pro/E conversion models

In order to successfully convert the 3D solid assembly model built under SolidWorks 2006 software into the model under Pro/E Wildfire 2.0 software, we must first understand several differences between them.

(1) The naming requirements for file names are different. Pro/E file names are limited to 31 characters, and file names and directory names cannot contain parentheses, such as "[]" "{}" or "()", and punctuation marks "." "?" "!" "; ". Underscore "_", space, and connection number "-" can be accepted. The file name can contain the connection number and underscore, but the first character of the file name cannot be the connection number. Only the letters, numbers, and characters can be used in the file name and directory name. Characters (except for connection numbers and underscores), object files and directories containing non-letters, numbers, characters (such as @, #, and %) in the name are not displayed in the dialog box, nor can they be retrieved from them, and cannot be saved in the file name. New object files containing non-alphanumeric characters cannot be named in Chinese. The file name of SolidWorks is not limited by 31 characters, and the Chinese name can also be used. Generally speaking, in order to find the parts, the name of the part file will be named in Chinese. To do this, first rename the file name under SolidWorks 2006 software in the same way as Pro/E Wildfire 2.0 software.

(2) The file type is different. Pro/E file types are sketches, parts, components, manufacturing models, drawings, formats, reports, charts, layouts, tags, or interactive files. The file types of SolidWorks are only parts, assemblies and drawings. The three file types of SolidWorks correspond to Pro/E parts, assemblies, and drawings.

(3) The method of setting the unit is different. SolidWorks must first use the tool - option - file attribute - unit - unit system - select - item (such as millimeters, grams, seconds mm, g, s) - determine, select a good unit. If you draw a graph and then change the unit, the previous graph size will automatically convert the relationship within the unit. In the Pro/E environment, the system default unit is used first, and then the Edit-Settings-Units-Unit Manager dialog box opens - select millimeters, kilograms, seconds (mm, kg, s) - settings - select Interpret the size - OK. Pro/E can modify the size unit at any time without changing the size.

(4) The design tree in SolidWorks is different from the model tree in Pro/E. Due to the different feature naming of the two softwares, the design tree in the original SolidWorks has no feature records after conversion, and the initial three reference planes are gone. In other words, the original sketch cannot be modified. To add a feature, the sketch datum must be re-established.

(5) In the SolidWorks assembly environment, if the part that has been inserted and established the installation relationship is renamed, when the assembly drawing is opened again, the prompt that the original file cannot be found (if the file name has been changed) will appear, and then manually Find to select the renamed file name and then open it, replacing the original part name in the assembly tree with the newly named part name.

2 Rename the file name of the physical model under SolidWorks2006 software

Take the 3D model of the PEQ400×600 tilt crusher as an example. The physical models of all parts and components in SolidWorks2006 are named in Chinese. In order to convert to a model in Pro/E, it must be replaced with a file name that conforms to Pro/E naming (without Chinese name).

2.1 File name of the replacement part

Change all part file names created under SolidWorks2006 software to file names without Chinese names. To make it easier to find files, replace them with names made up of pinyin letters.

2.2 File name of replacement parts (components)

Some of the components in the complete assembly are also named, and the name of the part in the physical model catalog must be renamed.

(1) Open each part (frame part, eccentric shaft part, moving part, fixed part, spring part, and double row roller self-aligning bearing) under SolidWorks 2006 software. Move the part named in the original part from the original file out of the original directory, place the newly named part in the original directory, open the assembly drawing with the part name of the original file, and find the newly named part file name by manually finding the file. Until all the original files are replaced with newly named files (Note: for manual search, the path of the new part should be the same as the path of the original part).

(2) Save these open parts and exit, then rename the file names of these parts in case the new machined parts are manually searched for assembly.

(3) Open the assembly drawing with the newly named parts and components. Move all the parts and parts named by the original file out of the original directory, place the newly named parts and parts in the original directory, open the overall assembly drawing with the machine name of the original file, and find the newly named parts and parts by manually finding the files. Until all the original files are replaced with newly named files.

(4) Check the model diagram of the whole machine, save and exit after the inspection, and then rename the file name of the assembly drawing.
