Alcoa opened a manufacturing facility to produce titanium, nickel and aluminum powders for 3D printing aerospace parts. The manufacturing center is located at the Alcoa Technology Center outside of Pittsburgh and focuses on raw materials, processing, product design, and product inspection. In the second half of 2016, the new plant will be separated from Alcoa's traditional merchandise business and added to Arconic (Alcoa's spin-off company).
According to Alcoa, the amount of metal powder used in 3D printing for durable, high-quality aerospace components is currently very limited. The new plant has invested 60 million in incremental manufacturing materials and processing to meet the rapidly growing demand for aerospace component production.
Alcoa stated that, in addition to producing metal powder, the plant will focus on increasing incremental technology issues, including the recently announced forging strengthening process, which combines incremental and conventional manufacturing technologies. Alcoa uses forging strengthening technology to design and 3D print a nearly complete part that is then processed using traditional manufacturing techniques.
This processing technology enhances the performance of 3D printed parts. Compared to parts made using only traditional incremental manufacturing technology, this part has increased toughness and strength, which in turn reduces raw material input. Alcoa is conducting technical trials in Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
In the past two decades, Alcoa has been producing 3D printing products. After acquiring RTI International Metals in 2014, it acquired titanium and other specialty metal incremental manufacturing technologies. The company also owns and operates one of the world's largest aviation high-temperature isostatic pressing technologies. The traditional incremental technology produces parts made of titanium and nickel-base superalloys, and high-temperature isostatic pressing technology enhances the metal structure of these parts.
